What I’ve Been Doing While In Quarantine

And you can do it too!

I really can’t believe how long we’ve been quarantined for. So much time has gone by that I really am just stuck in my routine now. If I can even call it that.

When school work started to trickle down into nothing and I was just waiting for a couple of final exams to happen, I was basically doing just three things every day. And I made such a thing of it, that suddenly my day had this whole direction, it was like another form of being in school. At first it was fun, obviously, and then it became a little tedious but still better than spending 10 hours on my phone.

My routine’s a little different now that I have a work-from-home kind of job but I’m still more or less sticking to the same couple of activities because being bored, really doesn’t work for me.

So here’s a couple of things I’ve been doing while in quarantine and here’s a couple of things that you could also do.

1. Working Out

I am fairly amazed that when I tell people I’m working out like almost every day, I’m not actually lying. I had a pretty irregular workout routine before, it wasn’t very specific and I was just doing any day I felt like. Then I started doing them on most days just because it was the only thing I could think of doing that wouldn’t involve sitting in one place the whole time and I do believe I need to stay active. Only recently did I come out with a specific sort of schedule; 5 days a week with rest days on Wednesdays and Sundays. I also don’t really have a devoted day for certain things but I’m usually focusing on the same araeas each time.

It’s a lot easier than you’d think to workout that often. I basically look forward to it because I usually have a headache after a full day of staring at a myriad of screens.

2. Cooking (and now meal prep-ing)

So I’ve always been cooking, I mean, a girl’s gotta eat, right? But because I have more time to myself, I’m cooking more and trying more recipes. Like last week, I made a crack at Vegetable Biryani; tasted great, didn’t quite look like it.

And why does no-one in America sell Basmati rice??!!

Anyway, I previously had implemented more meal prep practices because it’s smarter and more effective especially for students but I kind of stopped because like I said, I had more time and I didn’t care that I was eating way later than I wanted to.

I care now though. I’ve meal prepped for the whole week, I’m quite proud.

3. Singing

I used to sing a lot more than I’ve done in the past couple of years and my voice is definitely not what it used to be.

My voice also kind of dropped at some point in my life which was… anyway, I’m still a soprano but more like a struggling soprano.

I decided to put together this little music project, it’s all very hush hush at the moment but I will say it was born out of my resentment towards my high school graduating class for not performing the medley we were supposed to.

I’m also reconnecting to my previously acquired music theory knowledge and I’m just putting in the effort to preserve my voice but in a really fun way.

Tip: Garageband is really fun.

4. Dancing, duh!

And before you ask, yes, I am a triple threat.

I’ve been choreographing at basically the same pace as before, however, I’m not just doing Afrobeats pieces. I’ve choreographed a hip hop routine and I have another unfinished hip hop routine. I’m enjoying how smooth the transition has been.

I’m really looking forward to my fall hip hop class so I can learn more technique, but yeah, it’s already a great step!

5. Writing

So I haven’t necessarily gone back to my screenplay yet and I haven’t even begun to think about the short story that I thought I would write but hey, I have a blog and that counts.

I did spend some time brainstorming an idea for a TV show; it’s coming together nicely!

6. Meditating

Okay, so I only did this like three times but I would definitely recommend. It just doesn’t work for me because I twitch too much.

7. Learning Languages

I’ve been passively learning Spanish for like a year (I know way more than you’d think, it’s not that much but it amazes me sometimes), so I’m trying to be more aggressive with it.

I’ve been working on German, trying to improve my fluency and all that. I really can’t hack some of these adverbs though, but we’ll get there.

It might be very hard to keep yourself motivated to do this while you’re stuck at home, even now, Duolingo is wondering where the hell I am, but set a routine for yourself and just be consistent.

8. Baking

So I haven’t started doing this to the extent that I would like but I’m about to join the Banana Bread crew soon, so wait on that…

Okay, I haven’t done VERY much during quarantine but this is the reality. It’s very hard to keep myself distracted from what’s going on and keep busy doing valuable things, but I find that pushing myself into these activities it’s just the first step.

xx
